Hitting the Trails: How I Combine Hiking and Photography
Hiking and photography just click for me. Every trail I walk isn’t just about getting to the top—it’s about finding those little moments that tell a bigger story. There’s something awesome about pushing yourself physically while chasing the perfect shot that makes the experience unforgettable.
Finding the Right Shot Along the Trail
When I’m hiking, my eyes are always darting around, looking for that perfect mix of light, shadow, and landscape. Whether it’s golden hour spilling across a ridge or fog rolling through a valley, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. Honestly, some of my best photos have come from random stops along the trail, where I’ve set up my camera and just waited for nature to do its thing.
Take Frenchman’s Cap in Tasmania, for example. That hike was intense, but the views made every step worth it. It wasn’t just about the summit—it was about soaking in all the little surprises along the way, like unexpected patches of wildflowers or the way the light bounced off the rocks.
What’s in My Pack
Let’s be real: hiking with photography gear can be a pain if you’re not prepared. Over time, I’ve figured out what works for me—a weather-sealed camera, a versatile lens, and a tripod that doesn’t weigh a ton. I keep it simple because the last thing I want is to feel bogged down. And of course, I’ve got the usual hiking essentials—water, snacks, and layers—because nothing kills creativity like being unprepared.
Back home, editing is where the magic happens. I use presets I’ve fine-tuned over the years to bring out the best in my shots. It’s a chance to relive the hike and see the landscapes in a whole new way.
Capturing the Whole Experience
Photos freeze a moment, but videos bring the entire hike to life. I love filming because it’s more immersive—you get the crunch of boots on gravel, the sound of wind through the trees, and the feeling of actually being there. It’s my way of sharing the full story, not just a snapshot.
Why Hiking Inspires Me
For me, hiking is more than exercise; it’s where I find inspiration. Being out there makes me slow down and notice the little things—the texture of tree bark, the way clouds move, the silence of remote places. It’s a reminder of why I fell in love with photography and storytelling in the first place.
